The Mental Elephant traces its roots back to January 7th, 2016, when it was founded in North Carolina as a college-based organization. Originating from a profoundly personal experience, our journey began when our founder, Miana Bryant, amidst the isolation of college life, found herself grappling with Major Depressive Disorder. Feeling alone and overwhelmed, she sought help and was diagnosed at the Student Health Service Center on campus.
Fueled by the desire to provide support and guidance to others facing similar struggles, our founder envisioned a space where students could connect, share experiences, and access resources for mental health. Initially conceived as a simple group chat, the idea evolved into The Mental Elephant, thanks to the guidance and encouragement of many friends and family members.
With the support of a dedicated team of friends, the organization quickly gained momentum, expanding its focus beyond college campuses to address the broader impact of mental illness on individuals' lives. As the COVID-19 pandemic reshaped our world, the organization faced new challenges and opportunities, prompting its founder to return to her home state of Maryland in search of similar organizations and resources.
Over the years, The Mental Elephant has undergone numerous leadership, mission, and goals changes. Yet, our overarching story remains unchanged: to help those who find themselves engulfed by the darkness of mental illness, poverty, and limitations. Through advocacy, awareness initiatives, and access to treatment, we remain steadfast in our commitment to supporting individuals on their journey toward mental wellness.
From its humble beginnings as a college-based organization, The Mental Elephant has become a beacon of hope and support for individuals navigating the complexities of mental health. Our dedication to providing compassionate care and empowering individuals remains unwavering as we evolve and adapt to meet our community's changing needs.
